Dear Choral Union,
Our third rehearsal last Sunday night was our best yet -- I continue to be impressed with your commitment to learning our repertoire at such a rapid pace. Thank you again for your hard work.

Many of you have noticed the social justice theme running through much of our concert repertoire, especially in pieces like Famine Song, Children of Peace, and I Am Only One. I feel strongly that our time together this summer can make a real difference in the Denver community, in addition to the pure enjoyment of singing together. With this in mind, I am pleased to announce that all proceeds from our two concerts on August 10 & 12 will be donated to Food Bank of the Rockies.

The mission of Food Bank of the Rockies states: "We will end hunger by efficiently procuring and distributing food and essentials to people in need through our partner agencies in northern Colorado and Wyoming." The FBR website continues, "Even in this 'land of plenty' there are many people who don't have enough to eat. Food Bank of the Rockies (FBR) strives to create a place for everyone at the table. In the area served by FBR over 450,000 people live in poverty and struggle to meet their basic food needs; over 151,000 of them are children. Hunger is especially hard on children, who make up 47% of our clients and must have proper nutrition to grow and learn. In today's uncertain economy, the need for food assistance continues to increase."

Tickets to our two concerts will be available to check out this Wednesday -- this is such an exciting opportunity to give the gift of song to our friends and family, and at the same time give the gift of food to members of our community. Let's plan to pack the houses on August 10 & 12!

Thanks to everyone who socialized after Sunday's rehearsal at Gelato d'Italia -- we had around 25 CPCU members drop by for gelato and fellowship!

Plan to drop in before rehearsal this Wednesday (6:00-6:45 p.m.) at the Smiling Moose Deli, located right across Colorado Blvd. from Christ Church. "Sandwiches should be fun."

Following rehearsal, plan to join the Choral Union at the Squealin' Pig (2700 E. 3rd Ave.) in Cherry Creek North. Another favorite from last season, the Squealin' Pig is one of Denver's best Irish pub experiences -- I hope that many of you will be able to join us for a pint (of water, of course) after rehearsal this Wednesday!

Announcing... CPCU 2007 Summer Season!

Dear friends,
I am very pleased to announce the return of Denver’s unique summer community chorus, the Congress Park Choral Union (CPCU). Please take the time to download the CPCU informational flyer and consider joining us in this exciting venture.

We have designed CPCU to appeal to singers who are unable to commit to a year-long choral program, or are already too committed during the program year to consider participating in yet another chorus. Our unique one-month summer season of 6-8 rehearsals offers the opportunity to meet other musicians from the diverse community of Denver choruses, discover new musical repertoire, and broaden your experience of ensemble music-making.

Due to the sold-out success of last summer’s CPCU Debut Concert, the steering committee and I propose a second concert for the coming season — one concert on Friday, August 10, and a second on Sunday, August 12. The repertoire for this season will be just as eclectic, diverse, and imaginative as we experienced last year.

In addition to my sincere belief that singing should be fun, I also believe that singing should change lives; with this in mind, I have designed this season’s concert theme around social justice issues (hunger, poverty, homelessness). Appropriately, all of the concert proceeds will be donated to one local and one global charity working to alleviate hunger and poverty.

If you sang in CPCU last year, I hope you plan to sing with us again, and bring a along a friend or two — singers of all experience levels are welcome in CPCU! Whether you are a returning or new member, please take the time to RSVP by July 10, 2007, with your intention to participate. Dear Choral Union,
I cannot thank you enough for the outstanding job you did in the concert last Sunday evening. Your focused demeanor and professionalism during the performance were superb. Each and every piece in the program was beautifully presented and deeply moving -- a true communion of music and emotion. I continue to be overwhelmed by the outpouring of spirit and generosity I felt from the Choral Union during performance!

Dear Choral Union,
Congratulations on an excellent final rehearsal last night. I'm so pleased that we were able to deal with our standing arrangement, touch on some difficult musical spots, and run through the entire concert repertoire -- all in two hours! Thank you for your patience and your diligence last night, and throughout the entire rehearsal process. It is through the tenacity of each and every individual member, working together as a Choral Union, that our concert will be a resounding success!

A few concert reminders:

Concert warmup call-time is 5:00 p.m. this Sunday!
Concert Dress: black slacks/skirt & solid-color shirt/blouse (any sleeve length) -- please no CPCU t-shirts in the concert.
If you would like me to set aside "will call" tickets, email me the # of tickets and the name of the person picking them up.
If you are able, please attempt to find neighborhood parking (a block or so away), which will leave the parking lots open for our audience. You might want to check out the ample parking available on 7th Ave. Parkway, directly across Colorado Blvd. from Christ Church.
Plan to arrive a few minutes early to deal with parking and dropping off your reception items in the kitchen.
If you volunteered a friend as an usher, please have them arrive at 6:00 p.m. to meet with Carole London in the church lobby.

Dear Choral Union,
We're coming down to the wire with rehearsals wrapping up this Sunday and Thursday. Although we'll definitely use every minute of the remaining four hours of rehearsal to prepare and polish, I firmly believe we'll be ready for a splendid concert on Sunday, August 6!

For our rehearsal this Sunday we will once again focus on "Swimming to the Other Side", "I Will Be Earth", "This Marriage" & "Agnus Dei"-- these are the pieces that need the most work. If you have the opportunity to take a brief look at these four pieces before Sunday, I heartily encourage you to do so!

Dear Choral Union,
Another great rehearsal last Sunday -- only THREE more rehearsals left. "Exciting" barely describes my experience so far with the Choral Union -- it's a joy to work with such a responsive, diligent group of talented singers!

For our rehearsal this Thursday we will focus on "Swimming to the Other SIde", "I Will Be Earth" & "This Marriage", and we will begin running most of the other repertoire beginning to end. If you are able, I encourage you to begin practicing hard spots on your own -- even just a few minutes of practice can lead to surprising results!

Regarding tickets:

If you checked out tickets on Sunday, you are responsible to either PAY for the tickets or RETURN them in a timely fashion.
If you missed Sunday's rehearsal, don't worry -- there are still many tickets available to check out on Thursday.
Please try to have your tickets paid/returned by Sunday, July 30 -- this will give us a much better idea of ticket availability during the week before the concert!

This Thursday we will continue our tradition of post-rehearsal bonding at Seven 30 South, conveniently located at 730 S. University Blvd. in Denver. Dear Choral Union,
Are you as excited as I am to be half-way through the rehearsal process? We've accomplished SO much valuable learning in only four rehearsals, and I fully expect to hear some dramatic leaps forward on our repertoire during our upcoming meetings together. You should all be proud of the work done so far! Hooray!

For Sunday's rehearsal, we will be reviewing several of the difficult passages from the last rehearsal -- many of which were the MOST difficult in all of our repertoire (thanks for hanging in there!) In addition to the review, we will focus on the following pieces:

The Union had a rollicking good time last night at the Irish Snug (thanks again for the suggestion, Melody!) It makes me so happy to see how many of you are embracing the social-community atmosphere of the Choral Union. This Sunday following rehearsal, we'll be venturing into Cherry Creek North for gelato, espresso, panini, and other Italianate yumminess at Gelato d'Italia Cafe (located at 250 Detroit St. between 2nd & 3rd Ave.) Gelato d'Italia is one of my personal favorite spots in Cherry Creek, especially when I'm craving gelato (Italian ice cream) and coffee! Plus, they're open late (until 11:00 p.m. on Sunday).

Dear Choral Union,
Thank you for another exciting rehearsal last Thursday evening. I am extremely impressed with your work ethic, particularly your collective ability to remain focused and intent throughout a fast-paced 1-1/2 hour rehearsal. Congratulations!

Thanks as well to those who were able to make it out to Goodfriends Restaurant after Thursday's rehearsal. I've posted a few pictures of the lively post-rehearsal proceedings on the CPCU blog (see below).

This Sunday following the rehearsal, I hope you will plan to join the choir in an outing to the Glendale Starbucks (adjacent to the Barnes & Noble on Colorado Blvd.) -- drop by for a Non-Fat Decaf Venti Mocha Valencia (or a less "high maintenance" beverage like "coffee") and fellowship with The Union!

Dear Choral Union,
Thank you for an exciting first rehearsal last Sunday evening! I am personally grateful to each and every one of you for your commitment to the Congress Park Choral Union -- the success of this venture will be due to each of YOU: your time, your talent, and your dedication!

It was wonderful to see so many of you stay to get to know each other after Sunday's rehearsal. In our continuing effort to encourage fraternization amongst The Union, we would like to plan a social outing to GoodFriends Restaurant just following this Thursday's rehearsal. Plan to join us for a casual beverage if you are able. Don't worry if you need to miss this Thursday; we will be planning different social outings to follow all future rehearsals!

I am very excited to announce that SIXTY people have responded with their desire to join the new Congress Park Choral Union! There is still room for more (particularly tenors & basses) so continue to spread the CPCU invitation to all your singing friends.

I look forward to seeing each of you at the first CPCU rehearsal THIS SUNDAY, July 9, at Christ Church United Methodist. The rehearsal will begin promptly at 7:00 p.m. in the Christ Church sanctuary.

For the first reheasal...

Plan to arrive a few minutes early to locate the rehearsal space, your nametag, your music folder, etc.;
Sit with your preferred part (SAT or B) -- there may be some part-shuffling (& divisi decisions) at later rehearsals;
Remember to bring the $20 music fee (per singer) -- checks are payable to Christ Church United Methodist;
Introduce yourself to at least THREE singers you haven't previously met -- help us build the Choral UNION!

At CPCU, we believe that choral singing should be challenging, exciting, and fun. The CPCU rehearsal schedule has been carefully designed to reflect the active lifestyle of the modern choral singer. CPCU will foster an atmosphere of diversity and community; musicians of all backgrounds and experience levels are welcome! If you believe that “singing should be fun,” consider joining the Congress Park Choral Union at our first rehearsal on Sunday, July 9.

Rehearsal Schedule & Debut Concert

CPCU will rehearse every Sunday & Thursday evening for one month (July 9—August 3), from 7:00—8:30 p.m. Because of the limited rehearsal time, we encourage a commitment of attendance at six of the eight rehearsals. A one-time music fee of $20 is due from each member at the first rehearsal. All rehearsals will take place at Christ Church United Methodist (690 Colorado Blvd. at 7th Ave., Denver).

Sunday: July 9, July 16, July 23, & July 30
Thursday: July 13, July 20, July 27, & August 3

The CPCU Debut Concert will be presented on Sunday, August 6, 7:00 p.m. at Christ Church United Methodist. Tickets will be offered at the following rates: $12 adults/$8 children, students & seniors.
